Cabo Polonio is a hamlet of 70 inhabitants located on the south-eastern coast of Uruguay, in the department of Rocha. It sits facing the ocean amid sand dunes that evoke the planet Tatooine from Star Wars, right in the heart of the national park bearing its name. Life here is "peace"—public lighting simply doesn't exist, and each resident must improvise their own electricity supply using solar panels, generators, and other means. The hamlet comprises a few concrete houses alongside several wooden cabins, some oriented toward the sea. Inhabitants draw their own water, and radio or mobile signals can be picked up thanks to the antenna installed on the lighthouse. Far removed from the bustle of Montevideo or Punta del Este. A true roots lifestyle.

You'll need to climb 132 steps to enjoy a magnificent panorama over the ocean, the village, and the sand dunes.

At the base of the lighthouse on the ocean side, you can observe dozens upon dozens of fur seals, a species very common along Uruguay's southern coast. More rarely, depending on when you visit the national park, you may also spot southern elephant seals or southern right whales.
